Eugen/Eugène Rosenberg, later Eugene Rosenberg (1907 - 1990)
Eugen Rosenberg was born on 24 February 1907 in Veľké Topoľčany, in Slovakia. He studied architecture and civil engineering at the Deutsche Technische Hochschule Brno between 1924 and 1926. He later continued his studies at the Deutsche Technische Hochschule in Prague, where he passed his first state examination in February 1927.
After attending a lecture by Le Corbusier in Prague in 1928, Rosenberg decided to spend a year in Paris and in 1929 he briefly worked in Le Corbusier’s studio. Upon returning to Czechoslovakia, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, studying architecture in the studio of Josef Gočár between 1929 and 1932.
He subsequently gained practical experience in the architectural office of Havlíček & Honzík during their construction of the General Pension Insurance Building in Žižkov in Prague 3. There he became familiar with ceramic façade cladding, a material he would later employ extensively in Great Britain.

Between 1934 and 1938 Rosenberg ran his own architectural studio in Prague. His projects included two functionalist villas in his native town, among them the Villa of Dr Viktor Mokrý (1934) and the Building of the Czechoslovak Red Cross (1933–1934).
His work in Prague consisted mainly of apartment and mixed-use housing. Between 1935 and 1937 he designed the apartment house of J. Hanák in Prague 7, followed by the semi-detached building of the Böhm brothers (1936–1937). In 1937 he completed an apartment and commercial building on Milady Horákové Street, and in 1937–1938 he designed two buildings in Prague 1, connected by an elegant passage.
Following the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Rosenberg emigrated to Britain in 1939. He was briefly interned and deported to Australia. He returned to London in 1942.
In 1944, he co-founded the architectural practice Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall (YRM) together with F. R. S. Yorke and Cyril Mardall. The firm became one of the most influential architectural offices in post-war Britain.
As a partner at YRM, Rosenberg contributed to a wide range of major architectural projects. One of the firm’s earliest notable works was Queensmead School (1953), followed by the development of Gatwick Airport (1958 - 1988). In the early 1960s, YRM completed several significant commissions, including the firm’s own offices at Greystoke Place in London (1961), Crawley Hospital (1961), and the Keddies department store in Southend (1963).
During the mid-1960s, the firm created the design for the synagogue in Belfast, the Electrical Engineering Building at the University of Liverpool (1965), and the planning and development of the University of Warwick campus. At the same time, YRM was responsible for major healthcare and infrastructure projects, including St Thomas’ Hospital in London (1966–1975), the Royal Infirmary in Hull (1967), and operational buildings at Newcastle Airport (1967).
Alongside his architectural practice, Rosenberg maintained a strong interest in modern and contemporary art. He assembled a significant private collection, parts of which were later bequeathed to the University of Warwick. His book Architect’s Choice: Art in Architecture in Great Britain since 1945, was published posthumously in 1992.
Rosenberg was a member of The Circle, an association of refugee architects and engineers founded in London in 1943.He died in London on 21 November 1990.
